Personality: Oikawa is not a genius. He’s intelligent and hard working, but he does not have a natural gift. This is more or less one of Oikawa’s defining characteristics and one he’s most proud of. To the point where he dislikes those who are labeled geniuses, particularly when it comes to things he’s also involved in. This is primarily shown through his interactions with Ushijima Wakatoshi and Kageyama Tobio. While he acknowledges that both work just as hard and want victory just as much as he does he loathes the fact that despite how much he tries to keep up with Ushijima he can’t and that Kageyama will one day surpass him. He belittles both childishly whenever possible and refuses to help with Kageyama’s growth, reasoning that his kouhai will surpass him one day why make it happen sooner? and he hates that. He hates always coming in second.
He is extremely passionate when it comes to what he does, and works himself hard. Often times he overworks himself. He’ll train harder, stay up later to plan, watch recorded matches of his opponents the night before the game in order to find any weakness he can exploit. This however, leads to disastrous consequences. As he nearly ruined his knee from overworking himself in junior high.
He’s been described as having a ‘terrible’ personality, as he’s flirty and childish, often acting very silly, a tad vindictive against people he feels slight him (or people who are geniuses at what they do) and has the ability to suss out a person’s weaknesses after observing them for a fairly short amount of time if he’s looking for it, and then exploit them in their volleyball matches. On the flip side of that he’s able to bring out the best in others, and will often make sure that when he sets a toss it’s prefect for whoever he’s tossing to. To those he chooses to take under his wing he is very supportive, makes sure they know he’s got their back, and helps them achieve their potential. He’s very loyal to those he considers his friends, even if he expresses his love for them by teasing them mercilessly and giving them unwanted nicknames. He does, however, know when to stop and give them emotional support.
His observational skills aren't just good at dissecting others. He's also extremely aware of his own strengths and weaknesses, this only makes more likely to over exert himself. Under all of his silly act he is a bundle of insecurities who feels like all his hard work just isn't good enough.
☆INTERSTELLAR
Choice Instrument: Piano, Keyboard, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass (electric versions of the strings would be pretty cool too!)
Rockstar Persona: Tooru Oikawa is an elitist jerk when it comes to music. His vindictiveness and childish habits have been amped up for maximum drama. While he’ll still be loyal to his band mates he’ll see most, but not all, non members as threats, especially if they play the same instrument as him, unless noted to be not as talented, then he’ll be okay with them. If he gets into a feud with one he'll use all of his wit to get even, and then best.
Tooru had a happy childhood, raised by two loving parents who were also performers. They were ecstatic when he wanted to be a musician as well. However, it quickly became clear that Tooru did not posses the natural gift for music his parents did. He was good, but only because he worked hard at it, poured himself into perfecting his style. His parents encouraged him to his best, but worried about him becoming obsessed with perfection. When it came to competitions he would almost universally make it to second place, and even in recitals that weren’t competitions he would often over hear people complementing him, but would often mention that it was obvious he wasn’t a genius.
Then, when he was sixteen, disaster struck, and Tooru lost both of his parents in car accident. After this Tooru threw himself into music. His music soared to new heights, but he was still extremely resentful of those who had the natural gift for it. And without his parents to stop him from over working himself he would often practice until his fingers bled. After an intervention from some friends he’s better about overworking himself, but he still might if anything upsets his balance.
He won't be too concerned with commercial success as he is critical acclaim, though he will appreciate his fans. He'll likely see himself as the his band's 'parent', despite being 18 and try to bring the best out of everyone.
Ideal CR: Frenemies, enemies, people to bitch with/at, people to take care of, people to make sure he doesn't overwork himself, and everything in between.
